As I ended my review of this Devil’s Due series’ first issue (see it here), I was optimistic and hopeful that writer Stefan Hutchinson could progress the comic miniseries’ story and quality. I was right to look ahead in a positive manner, as issue #2 of THE FIRST DEATH OF LAURIE STRODE definitely picks up and provides some actual chills.

Variety reports that Spanish genre veteran Alejandro Amenábar (pictured) is one of the producers on EL MAL AJENO (THE EVIL OF OTHERS), a new psychological thriller with fantasy overtones. Amenábar’s Himenoptero company is teaming with Mod Producciones and Telecinco Cinema on the project.

RESIDENT EVIL: DEGENERATION, the first full-length feature in the franchise to be created via CG, is also the first one to stay true to its video-game roots. Unlike the three live-action movies that came before it, DEGENERATION (hitting DVD, Blu-ray and UMD December 30 from Sony Pictures) moves the game’s plot forward and takes place after the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City and the fall of the Umbrella Corporation.

Next October, a High Moon will shine at Zuda Comics. The online imprint of DC Comics has announced that in October 2009, the previously web-only comic “High Moon” will be printed into trade paperback. The story revolves around Matthew Macgregor, a former Pinkerton agent, as he investigates a series of disappearances linked to the curse of the werewolf.

Genre fave Tony Todd told FANGORIA RADIO last week that the team behind FINAL DESTINATION 4, due in theaters August 21 from Warners/New Line, has yet to hire him to reprise the role of mortician Bludworth (pictured) that he played in the initial trilogy. “They sent me the script a while ago,” Todd said of the David (FINAL DESTINATION 2) Ellis-directed 3-D sequel, which opens with a spectacular racetrack disaster. “But they have yet to bring me in.”

Robert Rodriguez was one of the first filmmakers to stand up and show mainstream Hollywood that they could in fact churn out elaborately rendered, hyperviolent pulp fantasy cinema on a dime using greenscreens and video technology and actually make it work. His graphic-novel adaptation SIN CITY still stands as a testament to this CGI inventiveness, a technique that was taken to another level in Zack Snyder's considerably pricier, but no less ingenious, gladiator gorefest 300.
